AI x Science Seminar: Bhuv Jain

Machine Learning in Cosmology

Bhuv Jain, Walter H. and Leonore C. Annenberg Professor in the Natural Sciences Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Penn Arts & Sciences University of Pennsylvania

Amy Gutman Hall, Room 414

Professor Jain will describe how we map dark matter from large surveys of galaxies via gravitational lensing. Testing theories of cosmology with maps of galaxies and dark matter is a rich area for machine learning. He will describe the ‘old-fashioned’ physics-based approaches and the competing deep learning ones. Extracting information from maps on the curved sky also has challenges in common with climate modeling and other fields — Professor Jain will give a few examples.

Seminar: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Speaker Lunch: 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Presented by: Penn AI, Innovation in Data Engineering and Science (IDEAS), and the Data Driven Discovery Initiative (DDDI).
